New Study Uncovers Whether You Should Cut Fat Or Carbs To Lose Weight

Published

on

And It Proves What Dieters Have Known All Along

A new study hasn’t found much of a difference between healthy low-fat and low-carb diets!

People on the two diets lost more or less the same amount of excess weight.

Participants in the study were encouraged not just to go for low-carb or low-fat options but to look for healthy, nutritious replacements.

And after the study, participants’ attitudes to food had changed for the better.

Dieting is a very personal challenge. It’s not easy.

A specific eating regimen your friend swears by just may not work for you, and research has shown that there is probably no “one-size-fits-all” solution for losing weight.

Now, when it comes to the recently popular question of whether cutting carbs or fat is better, new research from the Stanford University School of Medicine has found that it may not matter.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, looked at 609 overweight adults ages 18 to 50, half men and half women, who were put on a healthy low-fat diet or a healthy low-carbohydrate diet for 12 months.

About 20% of the participants dropped out because of circumstances.

But results showed that people who cut out carbs or fat while maintaining a healthy diet shaved off about the same proportion of excess weight.

To account for individual differences, participants did 2 pre-study activities.

Participants had their genome sequenced so the researchers could look for specific gene patterns that could enhance or inhibit weight loss, and they also received tests for levels of insulin, a hormone produced the pancreas.

Overall, genome and insulin levels didn’t affect a person’s success on either diet.

“We’ve all heard stories of a friend who went on one diet — it worked great — and then another friend tried the same diet, and it didn’t work at all,” Christopher Gardner, a professor of medicine who was the lead author of the study, said in a statement. “It’s because we’re all very different, and we’re just starting to understand the reasons for this diversity. Maybe we shouldn’t be asking what’s the best diet, but what’s the best diet for whom?”

Notably, study participants were asked to to pursue healthy low-fat and low-carb diets, rather than allowing for diet sodas or foods that aren’t particularly nutritious just because they are low in fat or carbs.

“We made sure to tell everybody, regardless of which diet they were on, to go to the farmer’s market, and don’t buy processed convenience-food crap,” Gardner said. “Also, we advised them to diet in a way that didn’t make them feel hungry or deprived — otherwise it’s hard to maintain the diet in the long run.

“We wanted them to choose a low-fat or low-carb diet plan that they could potentially follow forever, rather than a diet that they’d drop when the study ended.”

At the end of the 12 months, the average weight loss of the participants was 13 pounds.

But some people lost more than 60 pounds!

While a few gained about 15 or 20 pounds. The takeaway, the researchers say, is that going for healthy, nutritious options is the way forward.

“On both sides, we heard from people who had lost the most weight that we had helped them change their relationship to food, and that now they were more thoughtful about how they ate,” Gardner said.

Nightclub Closes Down After Woman Rides Horse Through Dancefloor

Published

on

A nightclub in Miami Beach has shut down after bizarre footage emerged showing a bikini clad woman riding a horse across the dancefloor.

The incident, which took place at Mokai Lounge, caused serious outrage, sparking allegations of animal cruelty.

The footage has since gone viral, which has caused a heated debate on social media.

The frightened animal can be seen panicking as it’s ridden through the crowd of club goers.

Revellers can be heard shrieking, cheering and applauding as the nearly-naked lady is bucked from the saddle by the seemingly distressed animal.

This is awful poor horse😱

That is really disgusting it so wrong Shame in the club for allowing this
leonie (@leonie67695013) March 10, 2018

So sad to see this. I’m happy @mokaimiami is currently closed but who rented this horse to the club in the first place?

Almost 3,000 people have now signed a petition which pushed for lawful action against the club, showing concern for the horse’s welfare.

The petition on change.org read:

People go to night clubs to have a good time, enjoy drinks with friends, dance and party. This environment is by no means a place for ANY animal or wildlife.
A video of Miami nightclub, Mokai, showed a horse being ridden by a female employee and restrained by party goers in a struggle to run off. This is not only a danger to everybody in the night club, but the horses well-being and safety.
In the video you can see the horse stumbling and collapsing – probably due to a floor wet from alcohol, stress from people capacity and music/lights.
The question remains as to WHY a horse was let into the doors of Mokai in the first place, but the answer remains the same, ACTION MUST BE TAKEN for letting this happen.

Miami is a beautiful and great city where we love to have fun, but we will NOT support animal abuse.
Crazy!! Poor horse. Was someone trying to recreate that scene from #Studio54?! 😱

Miami Beach City Manager, Jimmy L. Morales, has issued an official order for Mokai Lounge’s business license to be removed.

Morales made the following statement:
I was disgusted and offended that any legitimate businessperson would think this was an appropriate action to take.
This activity was not permitted and as soon as we became aware, I immediately instructed staff to act swiftly in remedying this situation.

Miami Beach Police have now confirmed that the horse is ‘healthy and safe’ following it’s ordeal.

UPDATE: Miami Beach PD detectives along with @MiamiDadePD ’s animal experts have located the horse that was at Mokai. The horse has been inspected and deemed to be healthy and safe by Miami Dade PD.
Our investigation continues. https://t.co/pCI5TZ9sww

Let this be a lesson to anybody who thinks that it’s okay to use a living creature as a prop – animals are not here for our entertainment.

A l nightclub really is no place for a horse or any other animal for that matter.

Woman Dramatically Cuts Boyfriend’s Throat While He Chokes On Piece Of Steak

Published

on

Have you ever cut off a piece of steak that is too big, but it’s just too good and you try to swallow it anyway and nearly choke?

You would have probably either spat it back up and chewed it some more or force it down. But for a New Zealander, he wasn’t so lucky and the piece of meat got lodged in his throat.

Izak Bester was enjoying a lovely BBQ with his girlfriend and friends at Waimarama Beach, Hawke’s Bay, when he suddenly started choking.

His pals immediately started doing the Heimlich manoeuvre, but unfortunately that didn’t help the situation and the 50-year-old passed out.

He then started turning blue, and then purple, and then black and his girlfriend, Sarah Glass, who is also a midwife, knew that they were running out of time.

We would definitely want Sarah around for a situation like this because what she did next is impressive.

She grabbed a Stanley knife and found a spot just below Izak’s Adam’s Apple and jammed the blade into his throat for an emergency tracheotomy.

While it may sound like Sarah is doing more harm than good, the small incision that she made allowed Izak to breathe.

Their friends also had an oxygen tank handy inside of their property (well done!), which they used to keep fresh air flowing through his system and performed CPR for 30 minutes until paramedics arrived.

There’s no denying that her quick thinking saved her boyfriend’s life. He was placed in a medically-induced coma when he arrived in hospital and stayed in that state for three days.

“We had no choice – it was do that or he was dead,” Sarah told Stuff.

“I think anyone could do it if they’re looking at someone they care about and it’s the only thing that will keep them alive.“Izak had nothing but praise for his missus for her quick and smart work, saying: “She said it was a no-brainer because I was dead already.”

Incredibly, he said that the only thing that was painful about the whole ordeals was when he was brought out of his coma was a sore chest – not a peep about a casual hole in his neck.

People Angry At YouTuber Sonia Sae Who Gives Her Fox A Vegan Diet

Published

on

Vegan animal rights activist and YouTuber Sonia Sae is getting loads of criticism online for keeping her pet, a fox called Jumanji, on a vegan diet.

Foxes would normally eat meat in the wild, but the blogger is feeding it non-meat based cat food.

Some people claim that this is causing all sorts of health problems for Jumanji.

Sae has explained away a lot of the claimed health problems and insists that Jumanji is well. But that has not stopped some concerned people online, who claim the police are investigating.

In a public post, one Facebook user said: “It was recently also discovered Jumanji is partially blind already, no doubt due to taurine deficiency from his diet of vegan cat food.

“He is experiencing hair loss (which she claims is an allergy), appears underweight, and from the videos provided on her instagram last week, he is also lethargic for a fennec.”

The user continued: “[Sae] also claims he sheds his winter and summer coats…fennec foxes are a desert dwelling animal and do not have seasonal coats that they ‘shed’…meanwhile hair loss is a very common symptom of malnutrition.

“Sonia has refused to listen to experts who are all appalled at her treatment of Jumanji and have contacted her regarding the health of her fennec fox. Among these are a few sanctuaries, fox rescues, and exotic vet techs.”

The police are now currently investigating and hopefully some progress will be made in getting Jumanji the care he needs.

Although Jumanji’s natural diet would include things like mice, insects and worms, Sae has disagreed with such opinions thus far.

She said: “Thank you for being concerned about his health on this subject. He is in good shape, his blood tests are fine, he’s healthy, playful and hasn’t shown any signs of malnutrition for around 3 years.”

In another post, she added: “They use the word ‘abuse’ to describe the act of feeding [it] food that no animal had to die for. Despite the obvious oxymoron, any other non-vegan alternative does involve abuse by default.

“I am preparing a video to explain everything, debunking all the lies that some people have spread about this whole situation, putting updated blood tests, explaining his story etc.”
